This Double Room is what old school beach dreams are made of. It’s soft and neutral, with pops of bold colour in all the right places. Instead of leaning into the ultra femme and maximalist design moments we’ve been known for from our motel in The County, we went in a direction that felt a little bit more classically retro, while still bringing all the good vibes of the 70s. It’s a space meant to be shared by friends, families and everyone in between.
Here are the before and afters of this space, plus our source guide for all things furniture, fixtures + accessories in this space, as seen in Motel Makeover.
JUNIFY TIPS
1. Find your moment
We design spaces that make for memorable moments that can be captured and shared by anyone, on any device. When we’re in the dreaming and scheming phase of designing, we’re really focused on what “the moment” of that space is going to be, and how we can bring that one element to life and let it shine.
2. Embrace a high low mix
We're pretty big IKEA fans, and we love a good IKEA hack to create a one of a kind space on budget. One of our proudest moments in this room was pairing a custom tambour headboard with one of our favourite IKEA bed bases. Read below for our sources to recreate this look at home.
3. All about the mirror selfie
We’d already designed wow moments behind beds with wallpaper before, and we knew these rooms would be the go-to spots for girls' getaways, so we wanted to create something else that felt unique and bold - hello mirror selfie! We found the perfect, affordable full length mirror from IKEA to put at the foot of one of our beds, and designed the room to perfectly reflect in the mirror. Hello Instagrammable moment.

THE ENTRYWAY
Even though we went with a faded, beachy blue paint colour for the walls, we knew we needed to add that pop of pink into these rooms! The neon glow is a motel signature, and creates a really fun and feminine contrast to these rooms. Plus, it ties together with the entryway rug, which has more colour to it. We’re all about embracing colour in every space, to make it feel more lively and unique.

THE BEDROOM
These rooms are the epitome of beach dreams: they’re laid back, effortless and fun. Since you can’t see the beach from the motel rooms, we wanted to bring it to our guests in a very tangible way, which we did through our custom wallpaper designed by Candace Kaye, the warm wood tones and the pop of gold on the beds. But, we also wanted to keep it authentically retro, so we added in these totally vintage art prints, which are casually leaning on the custom headboard we built. THE BATHROOM
We’ve always wanted to do a fully pink bathroom to bring our retro, femme and maximalist design personas to life. But, due to plumbing scares and pricey floor tiles (worth it) we had to scale back. We went with this beautiful salmon tiled backsplash in the bathrooms, reminiscent of sunset colours, which we played up even more with a graphic sunset print on the wall.
